Calm river with stepping stones

About Kemuning

A consultancy built around the idea that small steps hold.

We started Kemuning because we saw good small businesses lose their footing — not for lack of effort, but for lack of a visible next step.

Our Story

How Kemuning came to be

Kemuning was founded in Kota Bharu in 2017 by two former business managers who had spent years working with larger companies across Kelantan and Terengganu. Between them, they had watched dozens of small business owners struggle through the same kinds of moments — expansion decisions, cash flow crises, difficult partnerships, and the weight of running something alone.

What struck them was not a lack of capability in the owners they knew. It was usually a lack of visible footing. The next step was not unclear because it was impossible — it was unclear because no one had helped map it out calmly and concretely.

The name Kemuning comes from the kemuning flower — a small, steady bloom found along riverbanks in this part of Malaysia. It felt like the right image for what we wanted to offer: something small, sure, and found exactly where you need it.

Our Mission

What we are here to do

Our mission is straightforward: to help small business owners in Kelantan and the surrounding region cross the stretches that feel most uncertain — one clear, manageable step at a time.

We are not here to build large strategies or produce thick reports. We are here to sit with you, understand your specific situation, and help you see where to put your foot next.

Clarity over volume

One good step is worth more than twenty pages of analysis.

Honesty over reassurance

We tell you what we see, not just what is comfortable to hear.

Local knowledge

We understand the specific conditions of running a business in Kelantan.

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

These are not aspirational values on a wall. They are the day-to-day commitments that shape every engagement.

Strict confidentiality

Everything shared in a session stays between you and us. We do not discuss client situations with third parties and we never use your details in any public way.

Written records always

Every session produces a short written summary. You receive it within 48 hours. What was said and what was decided does not stay only in conversation.

Honest assessments

We tell you what we see, including the parts that are uncomfortable. Honest observations are more useful than comfortable ones.

No upselling

We recommend the engagement that fits your situation. If First Stone is right for you, we say so — we do not push you toward a longer or more expensive option.

Punctual and prepared

We review your situation before every session so that time together is spent thinking, not catching up. Sessions start on time and run to the agreed duration.

Ongoing learning

Our team keeps current with developments in Malaysian SME policy, local market conditions, and consulting practice. What we bring to sessions reflects what is actually happening now.

Our Approach

Small business consulting that fits the reality of running a business in Kelantan

Small business owners in Kota Bharu and across Kelantan operate in a distinct environment. Local supplier relationships, community trust, seasonal trading patterns tied to Hari Raya and other cultural moments, and the particular challenges of managing a business with a small team — these are real conditions that shape every decision.

Kemuning was built with those conditions in mind. We do not import frameworks from larger markets and apply them here. We start from the specific situation in front of us, and we draw on direct experience of how businesses in this region actually function.

Our consulting work covers the challenges that come up most often for small business owners: understanding where the business stands financially, working out whether to expand or consolidate, managing transitions when a key person leaves or joins, preparing for a significant operational change, or simply making sense of a moment that feels too large to navigate alone.

We work with businesses across retail, food and beverage, professional services, light manufacturing, and other sectors common to the Kelantan economy. What matters to us is not the sector — it is whether the owner is facing a genuinely difficult crossing and wants thoughtful support getting across it.
